At Functional Friends, one of the questions we hear most often is: "Are they just
playing?"Â The answer is simple: Yes and that's exactly the point.
To children, play is fun. To therapists, play is one of the most powerful ways to build the skills children need for everyday life. Every tower built, obstacle course completed or game played on the floor creates opportunities for children to learn, connect and grow.

The Benefits of Dynamic Floor Play for Toddler Milestones
Play isn't simply entertainment, it's how children naturally explore their world and
practice skills they will use for years to come. As occupational therapists, we use play to
strengthen fine motor skills, coordination, sensory processing, balance and
independence with daily activities. A speech-language pathologist may use play to
encourage communication, social interaction, language development and turn-taking.
The greatest part of it all is that during play, children are often so engaged that they don't
even realise the skills that are being targeted. When therapy feels like play, children are
more motivated, more confident and more willing to try new challenges.

Why Floor Play Matters
Many meaningful pediatric therapy activities happen on the floor, enhancing development and skills including;
• Gross Motor Skills: Firm support for crawling and sitting
Floor play encourages children to move their bodies in ways that support healthy development. Crawling, reaching, kneeling, sitting, rolling and transitioning between positions help develop core strength, balance, coordination and body awareness, all essential
foundations for handwriting, self-care, playground skills and participation at school.
• Sensory Mapping: Textured, safe surfaces for tactile feedback
For many children, especially those with sensory processing differences, the floor can also feel grounding and calming. It provides a stable space where children can explore movement while feeling safe and supported.
• Communication: Eye-level floor engagement
The floor also creates a natural environment for social interaction. Sitting face-to-face
with a therapist or peer encourages eye contact, shared attention, communication and
cooperative play.

Choosing a Supportive Play Mat for Developmental Milestones
At Functional Friends, our therapy spaces are intentionally designed to invite
movement, exploration and connection. They also complement our vision of creating
calm, welcoming spaces where families immediately feel at ease. Totter + Tumble's neutral,
thoughtfully designed floor mats blends seamlessly into our clinic, creating an
environment that feels less clinical and more like home.
Beyond their beautiful design, the mats support countless therapy activities with the thick and cushioning 0.5″ memory foam that provides impact-absorption on the floor. We use
the mats during tummy play with infants, obstacle courses, sensory-motor activities,
imaginative play, floor-based strengthening and social play with peers. They provide a
comfortable, supportive surface that encourages children to move, explore and engage
with confidence.
That's why we're so grateful for the generous support from Totter + Tumble, whose
beautifully designed play mats have become a meaningful part of our sessions.
Their mats provide a comfortable, supportive space where children can confidently
engage in floor-based activities throughout the day. Whether we're working on tummy
play with a young child, building obstacle courses, engaging in imaginative play, or
encouraging communication during games, the mats help create an environment where
learning feels natural.
We also love that the mats are durable, easy to clean, and welcoming for families.
Therapy spaces should feel both functional and inviting, and these mats help us create
exactly that. As occupational therapists and mothers ourselves, we highly recommend
these mats to anyone who takes to the floor.

Play Builds More Than Skills
When children play, they're doing far more than simply having fun, it is an opportunity to
build the foundations for lifelong learning. Through play, children develop
problem-solving skills, strengthen their bodies, practice communication, learn to
navigate friendships and discover confidence in their own abilities.
For children with developmental differences, these opportunities become even more
meaningful. Play provides a safe place to practice hard things in a way that feels joyful
rather than overwhelming. It allows therapy goals to become real-life experiences
instead of isolated exercises.
At Functional Friends, we don't separate play from learning, they are one and the same.
That's why we're intentional about creating beautiful, welcoming environments that
invite children to explore, move, imagine, and connect. Thanks to partners like Totter +
Tumble, our therapy spaces feel less like clinics and more like places where childhood
can simply unfold.
Because every child deserves a space where they feel safe, capable and inspired and
where play opens the door to possibility.
